WITHOUT THE DANCING, THERE AIN'T NO DANCE
Welcome to WITHOUT THE DANCING, THERE AIN’T NO DANCE, a new series from the BWDC, created by Brian Webb and Les Sereda.
WITHOUT THE DANCING, THERE AIN’T NO DANCE, explores dance and film through the lens of renowned dance creators and film makers across Canada, from diverse backgrounds. These artists are known for the quality, experimentation and success of their work. They have impacted the development of a new genre, capturing dance on film.
We've also interviewed local individuals who relate amazing dance experiences. Lewis Cardinal talks about his experience in Northern Cree Sun Dances and the Buffalo Dance. He offers a very strong link to dancing as part of a living spiritual ritual. Usha Gupta talks about her experiences in Khatak, a north India classical dance form. Her dances tour across Canada and all over India. Irene McDermott is a grandmother who dances regularly in Kokoro Dance's annual Reck Beach Dance.
An interview with the legendary Edouard Lock. Brian discusses Edouard’s iconic film Amelia, and also his latest work ECHO.
Lewis Cardinal is a leader in our community. He and Brian talk about his participation in Northern Cree Sundances.
Brian interviews Joshua Beamish and Scott Fowler about their film, Falling Upward. Brian and Les travelled to The Hauge where Scott was dancing with the Netherlands Dance Theatre and Josh was travelling and working.
A conversation with young movement artist and film maker Ankita Alemona about her film, When Shakti Overpowers.
Brian interviews BWDC Board of Directors member Irene about her experience coming to dance as a 'non-dancer'.
Brian talks with Usha Gupta from Usha Gupta Dance Entourage and Les Sereda from Shumka to discuss dance in cultural communities and how it's part of our larger community, Edmonton.
This project has been funded by the Canadian Heritage Digital Strategies Fund.
