Michael Reinhart

 
 

Michael Reinhart, a graduate of The Ontario College of Art in1976, has a wide & varied ex-perience in the worlds of both visual art & music, having exhibited his paintings, drawings, prints & photographs in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York & Lyons France. Hun-dreds of his illustrative & photographic images have been published nationally & interna-tionally in books, magazines, newspapers & on television. In the late '70s he created experi-mental Super8 films shown at the Funnel Theatre in Toronto, while simultaneously attend-ing the studio school Art's Sake Inc. He's taken dance photographs for artists Joan Phillips; René Highway; John Oswald; Lin Snelling; Mariko Tanabe; Camille Renarhd; Ben Sures; Mile Zero Dance & Brian Webb Dance Company.

With long-time collaborator Lin Snelling, he has designed stages, lighting, music & video in-stallations for contemporary dance & multidisciplinary performances across Canada, nota-bly 'Woman As Landscape' & 'extinction', produced by Carbone 14 at Usine C in Montréal, & more recently 'Performing Book', 'versing', 'eva' & 'A Sounding Line' in Edmonton. He & Snelling were commissioned in late 2020, by New Music Edmonton, to create a video, 'far off & personal', for their Now Hear This, Winter Solstice Festival. Michael also created original music for video for the project The Collective Body, a gathering of dance artists & composers, curated by Neil Cadger in Kelowna BC, & presented in Edmonton, by Mile Zero Dance, a couple of years ago.

Since 1982, he has collaborated extensively with various musicians, dancers, poets, chore-ographers & directors in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, UK & New York, pri-marily as a composer, but also as stage & lighting designer, videographer & photographer. He created the original music score for Before Tomorrow, winner of Best First Feature at TIFF in 2009 & his music was used by renowned director Zacharias Kunuk in 'Kiviak vs Canada'.

Michael toured for several years, up until the pandemic, as a guitarist-singer-songwriter in Canada, New York & the UK, & has released six albums to date, among them lost&found; eCHO; Cyprus Songs & extinction. He is currently re-releasing a solo instrumental guitar al-bum Night Traffic, originally recorded analogue in 1996 in Montréal. With keyboardist Da-vid Ryshpan & bassist Jérémi Roy, Michael formed the improvisation trio Status Quoi in 2006, & they've continued to perform, record & collaborate on multiple dance scores ever since.

Until 2022, he was a member of Atelier Circulaire in Montréal, working recently on the creation of lithographic mono-prints dealing with concepts of information, identity & lan-guage, also printmaking periodically at SNAP in Edmonton in the same creative vein.

He continues to create drawings, watercolours & photographs as a regular practice when not composing new instrumental guitar works. During the lockdown, he released about a dozen various music & dance videos. Michael lived & worked in Montréal for 30 years, & recently took up full-time residence in Edmonton.
