This is 40!

Dear Friends,

Yes, the Brian Webb Dance Company is about to begin its 40th Season. While I tend not to look back very much, I am honestly committed to, turned on by, and excited about the arts of tomorrow, so I will for one paragraph!

When I formed the BWDC with some great friends, I had no idea that it would provide me with the forum to express myself through dance for my whole adult life. HOW LUCKY AM I? I could not have done this without the support and encouragement of my community in Edmonton, Alberta and Canada, and all the people who have been part of my adventure! I am very thankful for support from all three levels of government, and even more so from all of you who have supported the BWDC's vision of contemporary dance. It is very important to me, and I do not take it for granted. So, thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now to this year! The 40th Season will open with Prairie Dance Circuit featuring a new dance by Gerry Morita, one of our community's most outrageously original talents, and Calgary's Melanie Kloetzel. Gerry is one of the wildest dance artists I know. In her new work, Gerry celebrates punk with Edmonton's legendary punk band, SNFU. I guarantee this work will be a huge adventure. Do you dare to take it? It's going to be raw and vital, celebratory and down right destructive!

Melanie Kloetzel will bring her work It Began With Watching. In the last several years, Melanie has established herself as a distinctive voice in the Calgary scene. She amalgamates dance and spoken texts in a most witty personal context. I really think these two dance artists will that the BWDC is about the new, the here and now, and dance that is truly vibrantly alive.

This season, we'll present dance from India and across Canada. On the heels of the Prairie Dance Circuit, we'll introduce Edmonton to Attakkalari, a contemporary company from Bangalore, India. Attakkalari is the toast of Europe for its development of virtual reality in dance. From Canada, my dear friend Paul-Andre Fortier will perform his very last performances in Solo 70, and in February we'll present Wen Wei Dance's Dialogue.

In the spring, BWDC will present the Next Generation of South Asian Dance, that will feature four extremely talented South Asian dancers of the second generation who live and create here in Edmonton. The 40th Season celebrations will come to a climax with a new work, The Liminal, that is a collaboration between me and Gary James Joynes [Clinker!] along with 5 amazing dancers from our community.
